How Hegel’s theory of recognition applies to the relationship between individuals and social institutions. Give examples from the Pakistani social and economic context to reflect on this.

Hegel’s theory of recognition is based on a principle of mutuality and emphases that it’s bi-directional and recognition involves freedom, respect, empathy and compassion. When we talk about relationship between individuals and institutions, it has lot to do with the “meaning” of things and inclusion. An individual needs to relate to institutions in order to feel that he belongs and hence is supposed to abide by those rule & regulations, norms and values. The institutions focus on “good and right”. Now, the point here is that what is right? What is the context for being right and good? Something that might be right in a specific context can be opposite of it in some other context. For example, as Pakistan is a country being made on name of religion and hence here people tend to follow religious activities. Following the religious norms is considered the right thing. But on what cost? For example, organizing a religious ceremony in open public space might be a “right” thing as per institutions but it’s certainly not “right” for many individuals. So, understanding the meaning of right and respecting both individuals and institutions is necessary for both individuals and institutions.
